Colonial Champagne Cobbler

Colonial Champagne Cobbler

Let's look back to colonial days in Boston and taste one of the beverages enjoyed at that time.  I must admit, this recipe sounds so refreshing!

Ingredients:

crushed ice
1/2 tsp. powdered sugar
1 orange peel
1 lemon peel
dry champagne

Directions:

Fill a goblet glass 2/3 full with crushed ice.
Stir in powdered sugar then fill with champagne.
Compliment with fruit peels.
Voila !

Southside of Nantucket during Storm

White Elephant Entryway is always welcoming.
Heading out to Dionis the winds are incredibly strong
 Madaket Harbor

 Southside Beaches of Nantucket Roar
Capturing a few of these photos was challenging.  The winds are almost 50mph at this time and Hurricane Sandy's effects will be experienced on Nantucket Island into the evening.  The roar of the wind and ocean feels like a large truck is passing by.  Nantucket is now isolated from the mainland as the winds are too high for the airplanes and the tides too rough for the boats. However, so much worse in NY and New Jersey.

This is island living.  Today.

Downtown Nantucket as the Storm Arrives

Our downtown harbor is quite "choppy" and the winds are howling.  Still three hours to go before high tide.

Nantucket Surfing

South side of Nantucket before the effects of "Sandy"' are completely felt.

A few venture out to capture a wave.

It's not black and white film - the sky is grey and the water active.
The surfers look like seals bobbing on the sea.
We'll visit again to see what erosion took place after the storm.

Nantucket Prepares for Storm

Hurricane Sandy may be heading towards the Jersey shore but it will send heavy winds to Nantucket.

Nantucket Harbor is getting a little "choppy"  Brant Point Lighthouse to the right.

Homes on Hulbert Avenue with windows boarded.  Hopes that flooding waters won't approach.

Nantucket Coast Guard Station and Childrens Beach

Fishing boats are secured in our downtown marina.

Weekend visitors line up for one of the last boats to leave the island.  Before long the airplanes and ferries will shut down leaving the island of Nantucket isolated from the Mainland.

 Goodbye for now.

Cheers !

Nantucket Scallops

Families anxiously awaited the opening of Scallop season which began on Nantucket began Oct 3 this year for residential permits.  The commercial fisherman will begin their search for scallops on November 1, 2012 through March.  Bay scallops are truly the "jewel" of the island and are appreciated by all.  Jetty's Beach parking lot is an area that many people visit to discard their scallop shells after opening.  The seagulls LOVE this opportunity to enjoy the delectables left behind.  As the holiday season arrives many of these shells will be seen as illuminated ornaments on our local Christmas trees.  I'll definitely follow up and show you the unique charm of a Nantucket Island Christmas.

The seagulls are waiting for me to leave so they can get back to their pile of scallop shells.

Jetty's Beach

So calm today but tropical storm "Sandy" is on the way.

Where is Nantucket?

Nantucket Island is about 30 miles off the coast of Cape Cod, Massachusetts.  It's not the easiest place to get to but once you arrive it's as if you're a world away.  Many islanders travel on and off the island by ferry to Cape Cod or by a little "puddle jumper".  The passenger ferry takes one hour, the auto ferry takes 2.15 hours and the flight is just about 15 minutes.  Of course, flights are available to Boston and and other destinations when in season, but as you can imagine, they're pretty costly.   http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nantucket will give you a little demographic information
about Nantucket, Island

Yikes!  Over $100 to fill my gas tank.

Is it expensive to visit and live here?  Yes it is.  But hey, it makes everything seem like such a deal when not on island.

National Geographic named Nantucket as the #1 Best Island so take a look and see what you think.   This is my favorite beach - Miacomet Beach on the south side of the island.
